Childhood Ulcerative Colitis: Outlines of Psychotherapy
PAUL L. ADAMS M.D.1
1 Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics; Chief, Division of Child Psychiatry; Chairman and Director, Children's Mental Health Unit, College of Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville
The requirement of collaboration, among all the concerned physicians attending a child with ulcerative colitis, was discussed. Next were presented some outlines of psychiatric therapy for children with ulcerative colitis. The assumptions with which the child psychotherapist is equipped were stated to be:
1. The entire family is considered to be the relevant biosocial unit.
2. The child is viewed from a holistic standpoint.
3. The child needs a re-balancing of his expressive behavior, with the goal of body pleasure.
4. The child is to be treated in his individual historical context, with an orientation toward health
Extracts from a case report were presented to illustrate the devices of a psychotherapy regarded as appropriate for children suffering from ulcerative colitis.
